addressing Narcissistic TRAUMA to reverse thyroid, hormone, and Autoimmune disorders

WANT TO REVERSE A THYROID, HORMONE OR AUTOIMMUNE DISORDER?

Unresolved trauma is one of the main causes of chronic illnesses.

The effects of trauma on our well-being are wide- and far-reaching. Trauma affects our emotions, our psyche, our ability to dream, and yes, even our physical health.

Unfortunately, how emotional trauma wreaks havoc on our physical bodies is still not widely considered or addressed. Yet, there is a direct link between trauma and the expression of hormone, thyroid and autoimmune disorders, cancers, and digestive disorders.

When it comes to conditions such as hypothyroidism, Hashimoto’s, Grave’s Disease, hyperthyroidism, Thyroid Eye Disease, PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome), endometriosis, infertility, MS (multiple sclerosis), Sjogren’s, cancers, Irritable Bowel Disease (IBS), Chron’s and more, the medical community made little progress in pinpointing the root causes. Since their training prevents them from making any meaningful impact on healing these conditions, people keep suffering. Even the basic root causes such as diet, deficiencies and toxicity often go unaddressed, let alone going even deeper in the pursuit of unburdening people who suffer from chronic illnesses.

We are changing this today!

As I have spent nearly twenty years helping my clients reverse conditions deemed incurable, I found that emotional trauma is one of the biggest contributors to their onset and progression. I also uncovered that without addressing this trauma that gets stored in our bodies, all other efforts lead to marginal outcomes, at best.

While trauma in general impacts our health, this article will specifically address the profound effects of narcissistic abuse. (I will let you know how you can learn about other forms of trauma at the end of this article.)

Narcissistic abuse is an insidious, pervasive form of emotional and psychological manipulation that leaves deep, often invisible scars. While physical wounds may heal with time, the damage inflicted by a narcissist lingers long after the abuse had ended, wreaking havoc on the emotions, psyche, and physical health of their victims. Many people suffer in silence, unaware that the chronic stress, anxiety, and physical ailments they endure are direct results of being entangled with a narcissist.

The silent nature of this abuse makes it all the more dangerous. Victims often feel isolated, gaslighted into their abusers' manipulative tactics. But not only their abusers, they also get gaslighted by the medical community. When the victims mention to their practitioners that they experience anxiety, depression, or panic attacks, for example, rather than figuring out why, most doctors, almost immediately, put them on antidepressants or antianxiety medications. This deepens the cycle of their suffering even more.

So, let’s look into the far-reaching consequences of narcissistic abuse, exploring its impact on your emotional well-being, physiological stability, physical health, hormone balance, and the triggering of autoimmune conditions.

Then, once I’ve shed light on the profound ways narcissistic abuse affects your overall health, I will offer you a roadmap to recovery that encompasses your mind, body, and spirit.

1. UNDERSTANDING NARCISSISTIC ABUSE

Narcissistic abuse is a complex and multifaceted form of emotional and psychological manipulation. At its core, it involves a pattern of behavior in which the narcissist seeks to dominate and control their victim through various tactics that undermine their sense of self-worth and reality.

DEFINITION AND CHARACTERISTICS OF NARCISSISTIC ABUSE

Narcissistic abuse encompasses a wide range of behaviors designed to manipulate and exploit the victim. This abuse often includes emotional manipulation, psychological tactics, verbal abuse, and sometimes physical intimidation.

The primary goal of a narcissistic abuser is to maintain power and control over their victim, often at the expense of the victim’s emotional, mental, and, yes, even physical well-being.

Who are their victims? Most often, people closest to them – love partners, spouses, and children, as narcissist work hard to mask who they are from the rest of the world. Oftentimes, they are perceived as impactful, noble members of communities. This makes escape from their abuse even harder.

COMMON BEHAVIORS OF NARCISSISTIC ABUSERS

Narcissistic abusers exhibit a range of behaviors that are confusing and destabilizing for their victims. These behaviors include:

Gaslighting: Making the victims doubt their own perception, memories, and sanity by denying facts or events.
Manipulation: Using deceit, lies, and half-truths to control the victim’s actions and beliefs.
Love Bombing: Overwhelming the victim with excessive attention and affection at the beginning of the relationship to create dependency.
Devaluation: Gradually undermining the victim’s self-esteem through criticism, insults, and subtle put-downs.
Triangulation: Using third parties to create jealousy, competition, and insecurity in the victim.
Silent Treatment: Withdrawing communication, and affection as a form of punishment, leaving the victim feeling isolated and desperate for reconciliation.
Isolation: Cutting the victim off from friends, family and other support systems to increase dependency on the abuser.

THE CYCLE OF ABUSE

Narcissistic abuse often allows a predictable cycle, making it difficult for the victim to break free. The cycle typically includes:

Idealization: The abuser initially showers the victim with love, admiration, and attention, making them feel special and valued.
Devaluation: Once the victim is emotionally invested, the abuser begins to undermine their self-worth through criticism, blame, and emotional manipulation.
Discard: The abuser may abruptly end the relationship or emotionally withdraw, leaving the victim feeling confused, abandoned, and worthless.

This cycle can repeat many times, keeping the victim trapped in a state of confusion and emotional turmoil. The insidious nature of this abuse lies in its subtlety; the victim may not even realize they are being abused until the damage is extensive.

HEALING TRAUMA TO HEAL OUR BODIES

I’ve coached clients on their journey to wellness for nearly two decades, with the ultimate goal of complete healing of all symptoms and disorders.

My own health suffering - hypothyroidism, pituitary tumor, a hormone imbalance, and infertility - led me on the search for a solution my doctors could not offer. In the pursuit of my health, I looked at all of the things you may have explored yourself - medications, supplements, diets, detoxes, acupuncture, and more - the usual culprits most health practitioners, even in our day, focus on. While most of these are important, there was more that needed to be considered.

With time, I uncovered over fifty-two (52) contributing factors to the development of thyroid, hormone, autoimmune, digestive, and other chronic health disorders. And trauma was at the lead of that pack.

2. EMOTIONAL IMPACT

Narcissistic abuse profoundly disrupts the emotional well-being of its victims, leaving deep, mostly invisible scars that can take a lifetime to heal. The constant manipulation and control tactics used by narcissists create an environment of chronic stress, anxiety, and emotional instability.

CHRONIC STRESS AND ANXIETY

Living under the shadow of a narcissist means enduring continuous emotional and physical pressure. Victims often find themselves in a state of perpetual vigilance (fight or flight), always anticipating the next outburst of manipulation. Some move into a state of feeling immobilized (freeze) and people-pleasing (fawn) to survive. This chronic stress can manifest as:

Persistent Anxiety: Constant worry and fear about how to avoid triggering the narcissist’s anger or displeasure.
Physical Symptoms: Elevated heart rate, sweating, trembling, and other stress-related physical responses.
Emotional Exhaustion: Feeling drained and overwhelmed by the relentless demands and emotional volatility of the narcissist.

DEPRESSION AND FEELINGS OF WORTHLESSNESS

The relentless criticism and devaluation from a narcissist can erode a victim’s self-esteem and self-worth, leading to:

Depression: Persistent sadness, hopelessness, and a sense of emptiness that pervades everyday life.
Self-Doubt: Constant questioning of one’s own abilities, decisions, and worth, driven by the narcissist’s undermining comments.
Shame and Guilt: Internalizing the narcissist’s accusations and feeling responsible for the abuse.

FEAR, HYPERVIGILANCE, AND PTSD SYMPTOMS

Victims of narcissistic abuse often live in a state of heightened fear and alertness, akin to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD):

Hypervigilance: An acute awareness of narcissist’s moods and behaviors, constantly scanning for signs of impending abuse.
Flashbacks: Reliving past abuse incidents, triggering by seemingly innocuous events or words.
Avoidance: Steering clear of places, people, or situations that might remind them of abuse, or that might provoke the abuser toward further abuse.

As the cycle of abuse continues, the victims become emotionally destabilized, making them more malleable to the narcissistic control. The emotional toll this creates leaves the victims trapped, confused, and broken – emotionally, psychologically and physically.

3. PSYCHOLOGICAL CONSEQUENCES

The psychological impact of narcissistic abuse is far-reaching. It erodes the victim’s mental health, leaving them grappling with a range of psychological issues that can persist even if the relationship has ended.

EROSION OF SELF-ESTEEM AND SELF-WORTH

Narcissistic abusers are adept at dismantling their victims’ sense of self through relentless criticism and belittlement. Over time, this erodes the victim’s self-esteem and self-worth:

Constant Criticism: Victims are subjected to continuous negative feedback, making them feel inadequate and worthless.
Belittlement: Narcissists often minimize the victim’s accomplishment and strengths, further undermining their confidence.
Internalized Negativity: The constant barrage of negative comments leads victims to internalize these views, believing they are fundamentally flawed.

COGNITIVE DISSONANCE AND CONFUSION

Narcissists are masters of creating confusion and cognitive dissonance in their victims, making it difficult to distinguish between reality and the abuser’s manipulative narrative:

Mixed Messages: Narcissists often send contradictory messages, saying one thing and doing another, which confuses the victim.
Gaslighting: By consistently denying or distorting reality, the narcissist makes the victim question their own perception and sanity.
Emotional Whiplash: The unpredictable shifts between affection and abuse keep victims off-balance and doubting their own judgment.

DEVELOPMENT OF TRAUMA BONDS AND DEPENDENCY

Trauma bonds are emotional attachments formed between a victim and their abuser, often as a result of intermittent reinforcement of abuse and affection:

Intermittent Reinforcement: The abuser alternates between moments of kindness and cruelty, creating a powerful emotional bond.
Dependency: Victims become emotionally dependent on the abuser for validation and self-worth, despite the harm caused.
Difficulty Leaving: Trauma bonds make it incredibly hard for victims to break free from the abusive relationship, as they feel a deep emotional connection to their abuser.

LONG-TERM PSYCHOLOGICAL SCARS AND DIFFICULTY IN FORMING HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS

The psychological scars left by narcissistic abuse can have long-lasting effects, making it difficult for the victims to form and maintain healthy relationships:

Trust Issues: Victims struggle to trust others, fearing betrayal and manipulation.
Emotional Numbness: To protect from further pain, victims may become emotionally numb and detached.
Fear of Intimacy: The fear of being hurt again can lead victims to avoid close relationships, resulting in isolation and loneliness.

4. PHYSICAL HEALTH EFFECTS

While the health community at large now recognizes the effect narcissistic abuse has on one’s emotions and psychology, the effects that get most overlooked are physical in nature.

However, narcissistic abuse doesn’t just wreak havoc on the mind and emotions—it also takes a significant toll on physical health.

The chronic stress and emotional turmoil inflicted by a narcissist manifest in a range of physical symptoms and health conditions that can be both debilitating and long-lasting.

STRESS-RELATED ILLNESSES AND WEAKENED IMMUNE SYSTEM

Chronic stress from narcissistic abuse places the body in a state of “fight or flight,” leading to various stress-related illnesses:

Weakened Immune System: Prolonged stress suppresses the immune system, making the body more susceptible to infections and illnesses.
Inflammation: Chronic stress can lead to systemic inflammation, which is linked to numerous health issues, including heart disease, hormonal disruptions and autoimmune conditions.
Hypertension: Persistent stress can cause high blood pressure and irregular heartbeat, increasing the risk of cardiovascular problems.

CHRONIC FATIGUE SYNDROME AND FIBROMYALGIA

The relentless emotional and psychological pressure from narcissistic abuse often leads to fatigue and pain disorders:

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS): Victims may experience extreme, unrelenting fatigue that doesn’t improve with rest, significantly impacting their quality of life.
Fibromyalgia: This condition is characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain, fatigue, and tenderness in localized areas, often triggered by prolonged stress.

IMPACT ON SLEEP AND OVERALL ENERGY LEVELS

Narcissistic abuse severely disrupts sleep patterns, leading to various sleep-related issues:

Insomnia: Victims often struggle to fall asleep or stay asleep too long due to anxiety, hypervigilance, and intrusive thoughts.
Nightmares: Recurrent nightmares about the abuse can further disrupt sleep and exacerbate stress.
Sleep Deprivation: Chronic lack of restful sleep leads to exhaustion, impairing cognitive function and overall energy levels.

PHYSICAL SYMPTOMS AS MANIFESTATION OF EMOTIONAL AND PHYSICAL STRESS

The body often expresses emotional and physical stress through physical symptoms, which can include:

Headaches and Migraines: Persistent stress and tension can lead to frequent headaches and migraines.
Gastrointestinal Issues: Conditions like IBS (irritable bowel syndrome), nausea, and stomach pain are common among victims of narcissistic abuse.
Muscle Tension and Pain: Constant stress can cause muscle tension, leading to pain and stiffness in the neck, shoulders, and back.

5. HORMONAL IMBALANCES

The chronic stress and emotional turmoil caused by narcissistic abuse affect hormones too.

The endocrine system which regulates hormones can be thrown into disarray, leading to a cascade of health issues that further complicate the victim’s physical and mental well-being.

THE ROLE OF CHRONIC STRESS IN DISRUPTING HORMONAL BALANCE

Chronic stress from narcissistic abuse perpetually activates the body’s stress response, leading to hormonal imbalances:

Cortisol Dysregulation: Prolonged stress leads to excessive production of cortisol, the primary stress hormone, disrupting the balance of other hormones.
Adrenal Gland Overload: Constant activation of the stress response can exhaust the adrenal glands, leading to adrenal fatigue.

EFFECTS ON CORTISOL LEVELS AND ADRENAL FATIGUE

Cortisol, while essential for managing stress, can cause significant harm when chronically elevated:

Increased Cortisol Levels: Chronic stress keeps cortisol levels high, which can lead to weight gain, particularly around the abdomen, and increased blood sugar levels. Increased blood sugar levels can lead to the initiation of diabetes and PCOS.
Adrenal Fatigue: Over time, the adrenal glands become overworked and unable to produce sufficient cortisol, leading to symptoms like extreme fatigue, weakened immunity, and difficulty handling stress and healing.

IMPACT ON REPRODUCTIVE HORMONES AND MENSTRUAL CYCLE IRREGULARITIES

Stress from narcissistic abuse can disrupt the production of reproductive hormones, affecting menstrual health and fertility:

Menstrual Irregularities: High stress levels can lead to irregular periods, missed periods, or excessively heavy or light menstrual flow.
Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS): Stress can exacerbate PMS symptoms, making them more severe and difficult to manage.
Fertility Issues: Chronic stress and hormonal imbalances can impair ovulation and fertility, complicating efforts to conceive.

LONG-TERM CONSEQUENCES ON HORMONAL HEALTH

The long-term impact of disrupted hormonal balance can lead to chronic health issues:

Thyroid Dysfunction: Chronic stress can interfere with thyroid hormone production, leading to conditions such as hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism.
Metabolic Disorders: Hormonal imbalances can contribute to metabolic syndrome, characterized by a cluster of conditions like high blood pressure, high blood sugar, and abnormal cholesterol levels.
Mental Health Disorders: Hormonal imbalances can also exacerbate mental health issues, including anxiety and depression.

6. AUTOIMMUNE CONDITIONS

The connection between narcissistic abuse and autoimmune conditions is an overlooked aspect of the long-term health impact on victims. Chronic emotional and psychological stress can significantly disrupt the immune system, triggering or exacerbating autoimmune responses.

CONNECTION BETWEEN CHRONIC STRESS AND AUTOIMMUNE DISORDERS

Chronic stress, such as that caused by narcissistic abuse, plays a pivotal role in the development and worsening of autoimmune conditions:

Immune System Dysregulation: Persistent stress disrupts normal immune function, leading to an overactive immune response where the body mistakenly attacks its own tissues.
Inflammation: Chronic stress promotes inflammation, a key factor in the development and progression of autoimmune diseases.

HOW TRAUMA AND EMOTIONAL STRESS CAN TRIGGER OR EXACERBATE AUTOIMMUNE RESPONSES

The trauma and emotional stress from narcissistic abuse can act as triggers for autoimmune conditions, initiating or worsening the body's autoimmune response:

Stress as a Trigger: Stressful events and ongoing emotional abuse can serve as triggers for the onset of autoimmune diseases.
Flare-Ups: For those already diagnosed with an autoimmune condition, stress can cause significant flare-ups, intensifying symptoms and complicating management.

COMMON AUTOIMMUNE CONDITIONS LINKED TO NARCISSISTIC ABUSE

Here are some examples of autoimmune conditions that can be triggered by chronic stress and trauma from narcissistic abuse:

Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis: Stress can contribute to the onset and progression of this autoimmune thyroid condition, leading to symptoms like fatigue, weight gain, and depression.
Grave's DiseaseChronic stress can trigger or worsen Grave's Disease, an autoimmune disorder that causes the thyroid to become overactive, leading to symptoms such as weight loss, rapid heartbeat, anxiety, and irritability.
Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA): Emotional stress can exacerbate the inflammation and joint pain associated with RA.
Sjogren’s Syndrome: This condition, characterized by dry eyes and mouth, can be triggered or worsened by chronic stress.
Multiple Sclerosis (MS): Chronic stress and trauma can initiate or worsen the symptoms of MS, a condition where the immune system attacks the protective covering of nerves, leading to issues with movement, vision, and overall nerve function.
Cancers: Chronic stress and trauma from narcissistic abuse can also increase the risk of certain types of cancer. The body's constant state of stress and the resulting inflammation and immune system suppression create an environment conducive to the development and progression of cancer.

HEALING NARCISSISTIC TRAUMA TO HEAL THYROID, HORMONE, AND AUTOIMMUNE DISORDERS

7. HEALING AND RECOVERY

Healing from narcissistic abuse is a multifaceted process that requires addressing the emotional, psychological, and physical damage inflicted by the abuser. A holistic approach that encompasses therapy, support, dietary, and lifestyle changes is essential for full recovery.

IMPORTANCE OF RECOGNIZING AND ACKNOWLEDGING THE ABUSE

The first step in the healing journey is recognizing and acknowledging the abuse:

Awareness: Victims must understand and accept that they have been subjected to narcissistic abuse.
Validation: Recognizing the abuse validates their experiences and feelings, which is crucial for healing.
Breaking the Cycle: Acknowledgement is the first step towards breaking free from the cycle of abuse and starting the recovery process.

STEPS TOWARDS EMOTIONAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL HEALING

Recovering emotionally and psychologically from narcissistic abuse involves several key steps:

Leaving: Narcissistic abuse makes it hard to leave. Yet, with the help and support of professionals and loved ones, and a dose of resolve, leaving is the first step to removing yourself from a dangerous situation. Without leaving, it will be impossible to heal.
Therapy: Professional therapy with a therapist experienced in trauma and narcissistic abuse, can help victims process their experiences and begin healing.
Support: Whether it is reaching out to family, working with a coach, or joining a support group, it’s important to connect with others who have gone through similar experiences, or those who are willing to hold space for you, providing a sense of community and understanding.
Mindfulness and Meditation: Practices like mindfulness and meditation can help you manage stress and anxiety, promoting emotional stability. This is best done with a coach or a specialist, at least in the beginning, to avoid triggers.
Journaling: Writing about their experiences and emotions can provide an outlet for processing trauma and tracking progress.
Connection to Self: Taking steps to acknowledging your emotions, validating your feelings and trusting yourself is essential to your healing from narcissistic abuse.

But your healing journey can’t stop here. If you were subjected to years of emotional abuse, your body’s storages of minerals, vitamins and nutrients were getting used up to keep you in the Fight/Flight/Freeze/Fawn states. The abuse might have even caused you to neglect your diet and self-care practices. So, it becomes essential to address ALL of these areas in order for you to heal.

HOLISTIC APPROACHES TO RESTORING PHYSICAL HEALTH

Diet: You need a diet rich in nutrients to support overall health, reduce inflammation, and provide essential nutrients for recovery. (more on this below)
Detoxification: Detox baths, hydration, and eliminating toxins from the body helps restore physical well-being.
Exercise: Regular, gentle exercise such as yoga or walking can improve physical health, boost mood, and reduce stress.
Sleep Hygiene: Establishing a consistent sleep routine and creating a restful sleep environment can help regain energy and improve overall health.
Self-compassion, setting boundaries, and so much more needs to be done to shed the suffering narcissistic abuse inflicted on your mind and body.

HEALING TRAUMA HEALS YOUR BODY

Stephanie

Stephanie was diagnosed with a debilitating case of Grave's Disease. Over time, it progressed to Thyroid Eye Disease and a goiter. Having tried many allopathic modalities, she only felt worse. The only options that remained were radiation or a full thyroidectomy. Not ready to give up, she reached out. Once we uncovered that she was raised by a narcissistic mother which taught her to live in fight-or-flight mode all of her life, we came up with a plan to release trapped trauma and rebuild self-perception. She began to improve. The symptoms resolved as she continued to commit to her healing while also changing her diet and detoxing her body. She was symptom-free within nine months and has stayed well since.

Claire

Claire suffered from chronic fatigue and Hashimoto's when she found me. We started off by addressing her diet, ridding her body of toxins, and improving her sleep and lifestyle habits. In four months, Claire was 70% improved. Yet her progress stalled. It was at that time that she shared she was in a marriage with a man who exhibited all the typical signs of narcissism as described in this article, and treated her accordingly. It was clear that she could not improve further without leaving that abusive relationship. With careful planning and support from me, her therapist, and a close family member, Claire found the courage to leave. The moment she was on her own, she blossomed—spirit, soul, and body. No more symptoms!

The best way to heal trauma is to first understand the person that experienced it, their personality, their internal dialogue, circumstances, and where trauma settled in their body. Some of us store it in our thyroid and reproductive organs, like I did. Some, in our adrenal and pituitary glands. While some in our guts and extremities.

No two people are alike, so no solutions should be alike either. Our clients have over a dozen different techniques at their disposal. They range from physical, emotional, psychological, to spiritual practices, each tailored for each unique situation.

NEXT STEPS TO HEALING FROM NARCISSISTIC TRAUMA AND ABUSE

The physical health effects of narcissistic abuse are a stark reminder of the profound interconnectedness between mind and body.

If you were or are a victim of narcissistic abuse, you suffered in silence, perhaps overlooked by your family and community, and medical care providers, not realizing that your physical ailments are rooted in the emotional and psychological trauma inflicted on you by the narcissist.

Without addressing narcissistic trauma, no amount of diets, supplements, medications, cutting-edge protocols or even surgeries can help you resolve your symptoms. Real recovery includes ALL of these steps and more.

WHAT ELSE DISRUPTS OUR HORMONE, THYROID, AND IMMUNE HEALTH?

It feels daunting to try resolving symptoms of thyroid, hormone, and autoimmune disorders, including trauma. I’ve been there myself, so I know it firsthand. But it doesn’t have to be that way.

There is an easy way to address thyroid disorder symptoms AND reverse them permanently. However, it starts with a simple yet complicated step:

IDENTIFYING THE ROOT CAUSES of these conditions.

Over the years of helping thousands from all over the world achieve the reversal of conditions such as hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, Graves' Disease, Hashimoto's, Thyroid Eye Disease, goiters, nodules, endometriosis, PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome), infertility, Sjogren's, MS (multiple sclerosis), estrogen dominance, chronic fatigue, and many other autoimmune and hormone disorders, I uncovered over 52 root causes that trigger these conditions

Fifty-Two sounds like a large number, I know. However, without understanding your personal root causes, it is absolutely pointless trying to treat your condition and your symptoms. This is the reason you may still be suffering even after years of medical and naturopathic medical care.

However, if the ROOT CAUSES are IDENTIFIED and ADDRESSED, the reversal of these conditions becomes not only possible but probable. I know this because I personally reversed hypothyroidism, pituitary tumor, a hormone imbalance, and infertility, even though I was deemed incurable. And I did it without medications and with only one supplement

And since then, over the years, I have helped thousands from 34 countries do the same.
